A New Beginning: Welcoming Our First Heifer to the Farm

This week we experienced an exciting milestone. Our sweet cow Poppy gave birth to the very first heifer born on our small dairy farm, and we couldn’t be more thrilled!

It was just another chilly morning as Cole headed out to the barn for milking, but little did he know Poppy had been hard at work.

When he stepped through the milk room to call them in, there she was— her newborn calf still glistening with big brown eyes— taking in the world for the very first time.

I was inside bundling the kids up to head out for chores when my phone rang. It was Cole. I answered.

”Hello?”
”POPPY CALVED!”

I ran outside.

We’d missed it by just minutes, but what a joyful sight!! She hadn’t even stood up yet. We kept our distance as Poppy sniffed her new babe, and when she looked over to us as if to say, “Look what I made!” We headed over. Was this our fifth bull calf?

I leaned down and pulled the leg back. Hmm… nothing? I didn’t see anything. Odd. Was it a heifer?! “Don’t get your hopes up.” I thought.

Cole behind me, “Do you see anything!?” (He means balls, do I see balls?).

No.

I pulled the leg back again, NOTHING. I lifted her tail.

”IT’S A HEIFER!!” I GASPED.

OUR VERY FIRST HEIFER! WAAHOOO!

A First for Our Farm

This isn’t just any calf— she’s the first heifer born here on our small dairy farm, marking a major milestone for us. Her arrival feels like the beginning of an exciting new chapter, one that took years to write.

We’re honored to have her as part of our growing herd.

What’s Next for Baby [Heifer]?

Of course, every calf needs a name, many of you have sent in your suggestions of Penelope, Peppermint, Patsy. But, we haven’t quite settled on one! We’d love your help. Drop a new suggestion or ‘like’ an existing one!

As she grows we’ll keep you updated on her adventures and milestones, from first trip out to pasture to joining the milking herd someday!

For now, She’s just busy adjusting to life on the farm and figuring out those wobbly legs of hers.

As we celebrate this little blessing, we’re reminded why we chose this life. Farming is full of hard work and early mornings, but it’s moments like this— welcoming new life into the world— that make it all worthwhile.

Thank you for sharing this special moment with us. We’re excited to watch this little heifer grow and continuing to share the journey of our farm with you.

Until next time,
Sarah
